Description

Far Branthwaite Edge is a farmhouse, dairy, and barn dating from 1683, as indicated by the inscription "J & SM 1683" above the dairy entrance. The barn is from the late 18th century. The building features roughcast walls and is topped with a graduated greenslate roof, which includes original large roughcast stone chimney stacks and slate drip stones. The structure is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a single-storey dairy on the left and a lower two-bay barn on the right.

The windows are chamfered cross-mullioned, with two- and three-light designs set beneath cornices. The dairy has a cross-passage plank door framed by a painted stone architrave, and there is another plank door to the left in a partly-chamfered surround. The barn includes a partly-blocked segmental cart doorway, with each voussoir marked by mason's numerals, and a plank loft doorway above it. There are also casement windows in brick surrounds that have replaced blocked doorways, along with slit vents. At the rear, the house has a two-bay span featuring 20th-century sash windows set in 19th-century painted stone surrounds.
