Description
Catherine Holme is a farmhouse that was remodeled in the early 19th century, though it may date back to the early 18th century. The building features coursed rubble walls that are rendered, topped with a graduated slate roof and stone chimneys at each end. The two-storey, three-bay front has a central part-glazed door flanked by a single sash window on either side. The first-floor windows mirror those on the ground floor, with an additional narrow sash window. All doors and windows are set in stone surrounds with drafted margins. A stair window at the rear has an interlaced, semicircular head.
Inside, there is a 19th-century dog-leg staircase with square balusters, carved tread ends, and a spiral curtail. The hall and landing feature segmental cross arches with deep panelled reveals, as do the architraves around the doors. A dairy with stone shelves is also preserved.
Adjoining the farmhouse at right angles is a barn or byre of various builds. This structure is made of coursed rubble with quoins and has a graduated slate roof. A door in the north wall has a blocked opening above it, and the gable has been raised, likely in the early to mid-19th century when a loft was added over the byre. The front of the barn features two doors with chamfered jambs and lintels; the right-hand door is re-used and is initialled and dated "I & V.M. 1675". There are also later loft doors with segmental heads to the left of these doors, and a large segmental-headed wagon door on the left. The extreme south end of the barn has been set back with 20th-century garage doors inserted.
