Description

Gate Farm is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, possibly incorporating earlier elements. It is constructed of rubble with remnants of rendering on the south side and is painted or rendered elsewhere. The building features a slate roof and rendered stacks at each outer gable.

The farmhouse is designed in an L-plan, with a long barn to the east that is not of special interest. It may include an early block with a cross passage to the south, but the entrance is now located in the north wing. A later dairy has been built in the internal angle under a corrugated asbestos-cement lean-to roof, and a two-level store has been added to the north end.

The entrance front has two storeys, with a four-pane sash window low on the right side. Above, on the first floor, there is a broad plank door from the 17th or 18th century located centrally. To the right, the store features a wide plank door on stops and a small square opening with shutters at the top right. The main south front is also two storeys and has three windows; the ground floor includes a glazed lean-to, which is not of special interest, a two-light glazing-bar casement, a three-light horizontal bar casement, and a 20th-century steel French door. On the first floor, there are two three-light horizontal bar casements and a broad 20th-century wood casement 'picture window'.

Inside, there is a very broad bressummer fire at the north end with a large domed curing chamber, possibly where the original stair was located; it now has a 20th-century staircase. The interior features various rough chamfered beams and a good plank door leading to the dairy. In the return wing, there is a blocked door that may have led to the original cross passage, along with two blocked windows in the north wall. At the east end, there is a large bressummer fire with a very deep timber, flanked by a low blocked opening with a timber lintel and haunched jambs. The roof is from the 19th century.

Despite many modifications, Gate Farm remains a building of historical interest.
