Description
Clay House, located immediately east of Aikhead Hall, is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century. It features clay walls set on a plinth of sandstone and cobbles, topped with a sandstone slate roof and a brick chimney stack. The building is two storeys high and has two bays. To the right, there is a narrow fire window with a chamfered surround, while a larger original window is located to the left. The window at the extreme left has fallen out. On the upper floor, there are small casement windows positioned under the eaves.
The cross passage includes a doorway with a chamfered surround, and there is a corresponding rear doorway still intact to the right, although the adjoining barn has been demolished. Inside, the house retains its heck partition and a settle with a hood and firebeam. There is a large 19th-century cast-iron range with a recess for spices to the right, and a similar recess in the front wall likely served as a salt cupboard. The ceilings are beamed, and there are two pairs of upper crucks in the bedrooms. A brick outshut at the rear is partly made of clay. At the time of the survey, the house was derelict and unoccupied. It is listed partly for its group value with Aikhead Hall.
