Description
The storeroom for Newsdale Construction, originally a lock-up, was built in 1805, as indicated by the inscription above the entrance that reads "BUILT BY SUBSCRIPTION IN 1805 ANNUAL GROUND RENT TWO SHILLINGS FOR EVE ...." The building is constructed of snecked calciferous ashlar and features a barrel-vaulted roof made from the same material. It is a single-storey structure with two bays. The entrance has a plain boarded door in a plain opening, and there is a similar blocked doorway to the right. The left return wall includes a plank door set in a brick surround, and both return walls have slit vents. Although Workington is known to have had a lock-up, there are no records specifying its location, making this building an unusual and likely explanation for that historical reference.
