Description
Nos 1-3 on Church Street are almshouses that have been converted into three private houses. They are dated and inscribed in Latin, which translates to "John Thomlinson assisted by his brother Robert provided pensions and erected this matrons' college AD 1723." The building underwent early 19th century alterations and features painted render over red sandstone rubble, with painted quoins on a chamfered plinth. The roof is made of Welsh slate, and there are 20th century brick chimney stacks. The structure is two storeys high and has a total of eight bays. There are three 20th century doors in painted chamfered 19th century surrounds with shaped lintels, one featuring a square head, all beneath hood moulds. The windows are single-pane sash types in 19th century painted chamfered surrounds, also under hood moulds. Originally, the almshouses were built to accommodate six widows of clergy, each provided with three rooms and an annual pension of £9. They were sold by the Charity Commissioners in 1884. The building has group value with the Church of St Mary.
