Description
Red Spears is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It is dated over the former entrance as 1671, although it could also be 1611, as the date is obscured by ivy. The building has undergone alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of whitewashed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof, with the rear covered in sandstone slates and brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and has two bays.
On the ground floor, there are two 2-light stone-mullioned windows and a small fire window to the right. To the left, there are 2-pane sash windows on both floors that are framed by 18th-century painted architraves. The upper floor has a 2-pane sash window in a 19th-century surround to the right. The cross-passage entrance to the right has been preserved as a garden entrance, featuring a chamfered surround and a dated and inscribed lintel. The corresponding rear entrance has been removed, but one chamfered jamb remains. There is also a side entrance from the cross passage, which is in a 19th-century surround. The left end wall has 20th-century windows set within 19th-century surrounds. Repairs to the walls indicate that the building was derelict for several years during the 19th century.
