Description
The courtyard range and gatehouse with an adjoining barn at Warnell Hall is likely from the early 16th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure is built from large blocks of mixed sandstone rubble and features a sandstone slate roof, with the upper courses made of Welsh slate and a stone chimney stack. The long, low range connects to Warnell Hall, with the gatehouse having a slightly higher roof and originally being part of the fortified courtyard range.
There is a 20th-century doorway and window closest to the house, along with an original window to the left that has a chamfered surround and is situated under a hoodmould. Above the doorway, there is a late 17th-century two-light window. The gatehouse on the left includes a through segmental archway with internal niches. The upper floor is corbelled out at the sides and features a three-light round-arched stone-mullioned window.
The adjoining barn has two original 16th-century upper-floor window openings, while all other doors, lofts, and windows are from the 19th century. The rear wall of the barn has two two-light stone-mullioned windows, and the wall to the right appears to have been rebuilt at the first-floor level. At the time of the survey, the roof of the barn was in a state of collapse. This building has group value with Warnell Hall.
