Description
Sowerby Mill House is a watermill that has been converted into a private house, likely built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble with flush quoins and features a 20th-century tile roof and a 20th-century brick chimney stack. It is two storeys high and has five bays arranged in an L-shape. There are external stone steps leading to a 20th-century door on the first floor, with a 20th-century window to the right of the steps and another on the upper floor. A projecting gabled bay to the right includes a 20th-century door set in an alternate-block surround and a small 20th-century window above. The end wall on the right side has an external mill wheel. Inside the end bay, the complete mill machinery is preserved as a feature of interest within an otherwise 20th-century house. A 20th-century garage was under construction to the left at the time of the survey and is not of interest. The building is listed partly for its group value with Sowerby Mill.
