Description
Sowerby Mill is a former miller's house that dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble with flush quoins and features a graduated greenslate roof topped with 20th-century brick chimney stacks. It stands two storeys high, with three bays on the right side and two bays on the left under a common roof, which was previously used as stables.
The right portion of the house has a central blocked entrance that has been converted into a two-light window, which matches the other two- and three-light windows that are now 20th-century casements but retain original chamfered mullions visible from the inside. The current entrance on the left side features a 20th-century door set in a painted stone surround. There are also 20th-century two- and three-light casement windows in the blocked loft and cart entrance, which match the other windows in the house.
At the rear, there is a built-in stone sink. Inside, the house includes an inglenook with a heck partition and a firebeam, as well as a spice cupboard recess to the left of the fireplace. The ceiling is beamed, adding to the character of the interior.
