Description
Pow Bridge over Pow Beck is a Grade II* road bridge dated 1585, built for Archbishop Grindal. The bridge features his coat of arms and initials on a dated panel, which is a 1912 copy of the original, located in the center of the west parapet. There is also a badly weathered inscription on a panel on the eastern parapet. The bridge is depicted in Buck's 1739 engraving of the Priory Church and has been widened since its original construction. It has a single elliptical arch with a span of approximately 12 feet. The east side retains its original construction of coursed, squared rubble, with single stones projecting on either side of the radiating arch voussoirs, possibly serving as water-shutes from the original road surface. The original width was 12 feet, but it has now been doubled, with a straight joint running around the soffit. The west side and parapets are made of snecked rubble, approximately 3 feet high, with flat copings that rise to accommodate the inscribed panels.
