Description
New College Hall, originally built as a library in 1863 by architect William Butterfield, is designed in the Gothic style. The building is constructed from rough-dressed sandstone blocks, featuring dressed quoins and bands on the plinth, along with a concave eaves course. Its roof is covered with graduated slate and has a scalloped ridge, along with stone coping, kneelers, and an apex cross at the south ridge. A prominent stone chimney projects from the center of the east side.
The hall is two storeys high, with a single-storey bay window on the north return. The entrance, located to the left on the west side, has a pointed arch. The ground-floor windows on the west side and south return are mullioned, each with two lights that have trefoiled ogee heads. On the first floor, there is one window on each return with similar lights, featuring quatrefoils in the spandrels beneath pointed arches. The west side has four first-floor windows, three of which have inner trefoil heads.
