Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a house dated 1679, with later additions and alterations. It was built by Richard Caton of Lancaster. The decorative door lintel on the north side features initials IL : B (for John Lowther, Baronet, the owner), RS (for Richard Stainton, the tenant), and TT (for Thomas Tickell, the estate steward). The main block, located to the right in the farmyard elevation, has incised stucco with rusticated quoins. It has a graduated slate roof with an outshut at the rear, along with stone copings and kneelers, and rendered mid and end chimneys. The house is symmetrical, with three storeys and three bays, each floor featuring sash windows (the second-floor sashes are smaller). There is a part-glazed door on the north side, with a sash window to the left on the ground floor and two sashes above on the first floor. All sashes have glazing bars set in stone surrounds. Adjoining the south side is a two-storey, two-bay block made of pebble-dashed rubble under a graduated slate roof, featuring a plank door and paired sashes in stone surrounds on the right side for each floor.
