Description

The Byre is a farmhouse that dates from the late 17th century, with significant additions from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, along with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from coursed squared ironstone and limestone, topped with plain-tile roofs and features brick ridges and internal and end stacks. Originally designed with a two-unit plan, the building is two stories high and has a two-window range.

On the ground floor, there is an old plank door to the left, which has a pegged wood surround and a stop-chamfered wood lintel, set within a 20th-century porch. To the right of the door are 20th-century double-leaf French windows and a three-light leaded casement window to the left of the center, also with a stop-chamfered wood lintel. The first floor features three-light leaded casements, each with stop-chamfered wood lintels. The left side of the building has quoins and a stone-coped gable with kneelers.

To the right, there is a seven-storey, two-window extension that is set back and features two- and three-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors, with wood lintels. This extension also has a stone-coped gable with kneelers. A large two-storey, two-window wing projects to the left, connected to the main house by a short link. This wing is likely from the early 19th century and has similar two- and three-light leaded windows.

Inside, the farmhouse includes chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. The building was formerly thatched.
