Description

This is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of squared coursed ironstone, with a tiled roof and brick and stone stacks. The house has an L-shaped layout and two storeys and an attic, originally featuring three bays. A 2-light casement window is centrally located, likely replacing a former doorway, with chamfered stone lintels and jambs. Further 3-light casement windows with wooden lintels are positioned on either side. The first floor has a 3-light casement window with a wooden lintel in the left bay, and a similar 2-light window in the centre. A window opening on the right side, reportedly enlarged in the 19th century to provide access to a former loft, has a wooden lintel and a 20th-century 2-light casement. A central half-dormer, with a coped gable and kneelers, includes a 2-light stone mullioned window with a square hood. The entrance on the right side has a wooden lintel and a part-glazed plank door. A blocked 2-light stone mullioned window is visible on the attic floor of the left side. 20th-century brick additions have been made to the rear. The interior has been remodelled in the 20th century, but retains original chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The building was previously used as a bakery between the 17th and 19th centuries, and a first-floor opening in the right bay was originally a door to a loft used for floor storage. Part of the building was damaged in the 1905 fire that affected the east side of High Street. It is included in the listing for its group value.
