Description
No. 40 High Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and features a felt roof that has replaced the original thatch, along with brick stacks at the ends and ridge. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two stories tall with a two-window range. There is a 20th-century door on the left, which has a chamfered timber lintel above it. The ground floor has three 20th-century aluminium three-light casement windows, each with bar-stop-chamfered timber lintels. Above, there are two half-dormers, each with similar two-light windows. The house has a plinth, quoins, and a stone-coped gable with kneelers on the left side, while the right gable end wall is made of brick. The interior is noted for its chamfered spine beams. This building is included for its group value.
