Description

The White Cottage is an 18th-century cottage situated on Flore Sutton Street. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and cob, with a thatched roof and a brick end stack on a rendered stone base. The cottage has a two-unit plan and originally featured a two-storey, two-window front. It has 3-light leaded casement windows to the ground floor, with stop-chamfered lintels, and similar 2-light windows to the first floor. The front has a brick plinth, with courses of stone to the left; the remainder is rendered and whitewashed, and includes a stone-coped gable with kneelers to the right. A two-storey, one-window extension with a slate roof was added to the left, featuring a 20th-century 2-light casement to the ground floor and a 3-light casement to the first floor. A rear wing to the left, which may have originally been a separate cottage, contains an old plank door with a timber lintel, a 3-light leaded casement window to the right, and a similar 2-light window to the first floor. Other features of this wing include plank doors and 2 and 3-light casements. Inside, there are chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer.
