Description

Capell House is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in 1902. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and features a plain tile roof with stone end stacks. The building has a two-unit central staircase plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range to the street.

The front of the house includes a central horizontal oval keyed oculus on both the ground and first floors. To the left on the ground floor is a 20-pane sash window, and to the right is a wide 20th-century bay window. On the first floor, there is a small similar window to the right and a two-light flat-faced mullion window to the left, which has a moulded sill and surround. The eaves are interrupted by gabled dormers from 1902, each containing two-light casement windows in matching stone surrounds. The building features chamfered quoins and a first-floor string course, with stone-coped gables that have kneelers.

At the rear, there is an entrance leading into a 20th-century single-storey extension. Inside, the house retains its original entrance door with a stone lintel and moulded stone surround, stop-chamfered spine beams, and an open fireplace with a bar-stop-chamfered bressumer. The interior also includes a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters.
