Description
Barn Elms Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th or 17th century. It is built of coursed ironstone rubble with a tiled roof and brick stacks, forming an L-plan structure. The cottage has two storeys and is constructed in a two-bay cruck style. The doorway in the second bay from the right features a wood lintel, a half-glazed door, and a gabled timber hood supported by brackets. On either side of the doorway are 2-light casement windows with wood lintels, and there are also 2-light casement windows with wood lintels on the first floor. A blocked 2-light stone mullioned window is located on the right side of the first floor. To the left, there is a gabled extension made of similar materials, which is two storeys high and one bay wide, featuring 20th-century windows. Inside, one blade of the cruck is exposed on the ground floor, while the first floor has two blades and a tie beam. It is noted that the timbers on the left side are blackened by smoke from a former central hearth.
