Description

Bliss Charity School and School House is a school building constructed in 1879, with later 19th and 20th century extensions designed by the office of E.F. Law. The structure is made of coursed squared ironstone with ironstone dressings and features a plain-tile roof with a stone ridge, along with lateral and internal stacks. It is designed in the Victorian Gothic style and has an H-plan layout. The building is two stories tall and has a six-window range.

To the left of the center, there is a gabled porch that includes a plank door with ornamental hinges, a stone lintel, and small one-light windows above, all set within a moulded pointed arched surround with a hood mould. The ground floor features four-light stone mullion windows and hipped dormers. The building has projecting cross wings at either end, with the left wing serving as the school house. This wing has a bay window at the ground floor of the gable end, a four-light stone mullion and transom window, and a circular sexfoiled window above, flanked by small circular windows at the base, all with a hood mould and carved label stops.

A circular datestone on the gable is inscribed with "BLISS/ENDOWED SCHOOLS/FOUNDED AD 1673/REBUILT 1879" and features a hood mould. There is a Caernarvon-arched door on the inner side, and a similar doorway is located on the left side elevation of the school house wing, as well as on the wall connecting the school-room wing to the adjacent Heyford Cottage on the right. The building also has a chamfered plinth, a sill band, stone-coped gables with kneelers and ball finials, and a square bell-turret with a pyramidal roof at the ridge of the right wing. The school is included for its group value.
