Description
The Helmdon War Memorial is approximately 4 meters tall and is located on a small triangular green. It features an oversized wheel-head cross, which may appear larger due to the original height of the shaft, adorned with blind tracery at the center and along the arms. This cross is mounted on a square-sectioned shaft that rises from a short plinth, which in turn sits on a taller base made of a yellower stone. The memorial is surrounded by a concrete area.
Inscribed on the base of the shaft are the words: "REMEMBER HIM WHO DIED FOR US ALL FORGET NOT THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND." The names of those who died in the First World War are carved into the plinth, and a plaque has been added to commemorate one individual who died in the Second World War.
Additionally, there is a stone plaque set into the ground beside the memorial that lists the names of ten men from the US Army Air Corps who lost their lives in an aircraft crash at Astwell Castle Farm, located about 2 kilometers east of Helmdon, on 30 November 1943.
The modern post and chain fence surrounding the memorial is not included in the listing.
