Description
The Crown Inn Public House is a public house that likely dates back to the 17th century but was refronted in the late 18th century. It is constructed of squared coursed ironstone and coursed rubble, topped with a slate roof and flanked by brick stacks. The building has three storeys and three bays, with a 20th-century one-storey stone lean-to extension across the left and centre bays that frames the porch.
The central doorway features a wooden lintel and a plank door, while the inner doorway has a wooden lintel and a six-panel door with an overlight. There is a four-light window with a wooden lintel and a re-used old iron casement, and the original lintel of a former window in the left bay remains in the inner wall. The right bay has a three-light window with a wooden lintel and an old iron casement. Similar windows are found in the outer bays on the first floor, along with a two-light window in the centre. The third floor features a 16-pane sash window. The gable ends are coped with kneelers.
Inside, the ground floor has two rooms, each with a set of stop-chamfered beams. The room on the right contains a 16th or 17th-century stone fireplace with a four-centred arch (not in situ), while the room on the left has an open fireplace and an old timber lattice work cupboard on the right side. The Inn was formerly owned by All Souls College, Oxford, and was first recorded as a hostelry in 1593. A datestone above the lintel of the former window in the left bay on the ground floor (not internal) is inscribed 'College Free 1792 JBL'.
