Description
The K6 telephone kiosk in Bugbrooke is a Grade II listed structure, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and produced by various contractors. This cast iron kiosk is painted red and features relief crowns in the segmental upper sections on each side, above glazed panels that display the word 'TELEPHONE'. The door and two sides are glazed, each containing eight horizontal panes with narrow margin lights, although some central panes are missing.
The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design. It was created for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee and is a refined version of Scott's earlier K2 design from 1924, which was inspired by Neoclassical architecture. The K6 is more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective for mass production. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) was a prominent British architect, known for notable works such as the Anglican cathedral of Liverpool and Battersea power station. The K2 and K6 kiosks exemplify a thoughtful blend of architectural tradition with modern technological needs. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, and while many were replaced in the 1960s, many still stand as iconic features of British streetscapes.
The K6 telephone kiosk in Bugbrooke is recognized for its iconic design and its group value with five other Grade II listed buildings: The Grange at 38 High Street, 2 Ace Lane, the Bakers Arms Public House, 37-43 High Street, and 47 High Street.
