Description
Cedar Lodge is a house located on Kilsby Main Road, built in the early 19th century, likely incorporating elements from the early 18th century. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble, with a cornice that has been rebuilt in ironstone and a slate roof supported by flanking brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features five bays. The central doorway is framed with wooden pilasters and fluted capitals, topped with an open pediment on scroll brackets, and has a 20th-century door. To the left of the entrance is a sash window with a rendered lintel, while to the right is a 19th-century French window with a wooden lintel. The first floor has sash windows with rendered lintels. There is a 20th-century extension to the left, built of brick with an ironstone front, and it has a slate roof and one bay with sash windows that have plain stone surrounds. Inside, the room to the right of the entrance features reused 18th-century panelling and an overmantel, and the ceiling in this room is lower than in other parts of the house, suggesting it may be older. It is noted that Robert Stephenson, the engineer, is said to have stayed here while supervising the construction of the Kilsby Tunnel between 1833 and 1838. The building is included for its group value.
