WATFORD GRAND UNION CANAL SP56NE 5/280 Mile Post

Mile post. Late C19. Cast iron with inscription "G.J.C. Co. Leicester 38 miles". The Grand Union Canal was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1810. The Watford section was opened in 1814. In 1893-4 the Leicester line of the canal was taken over by the Grand Junction Canal Company. (A.H. Faulkner, The Grand Junction Canal, 1972, p.190).
