Description

This house, numbers 2 and 4 Astrop Road, dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone and ironstone rubble, with a slate roof, a coped gable on the left side, and brick stacks. The house is two storeys and an attic, with one bay. A shop front, added around 1840, features panelled pilasters and a moulded entablature, framing a central doorway with a six-panel door. To the left, there is a bay window with four panes by seven panes, and a smaller, altered bay window to the right. A first-floor window is a two-light wooden casement with a wooden lintel. A 19th-century gabled dormer is present, featuring a scalloped barge board. Inside, late 19th-century shop fittings remain, including tiers of shelves divided by turned blusters and arched tops. The interior was apparently fitted out for a tea merchant in the 19th century.
