Description
The Old School House is a house that was formerly a school and school house, dated 1762 and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble and features an asbestos tile roof with brick stacks at the ends and ridge. The building has a two-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-window range. The main façade faces the garden, which was formerly the school yard, to the south and includes two-light 20th-century windows on the ground floor. The ground floor windows were originally positioned higher, as indicated by the surviving wooden lintels two courses above the current windows. The first floor features two-light leaded casement windows with wooden lintels, all leaded except for the window on the far left. The gables are stone-coped with kneelers, and the entrance is located at the rear. A datestone on the right gable facing the street is inscribed with "TW/1762." The interior has not been inspected. A provision to build a school house was included in the will of William Ward dated 5th March 1673. The initials on the building belong to Thomas Ward, who lived from 1706 to 1772. The building functioned as a school until 1891.
