Description

The Old Forge is a house, formerly a dwelling and forge, located on Bedford Road in Little Houghton. It dates to the 18th century and is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with a ridged tile roof, brick end stacks, and an internal stack. The building has a 3-unit plan and a 5-window facade. It features part-glazed doors centrally, to the right of centre, and to the far left, these last being set within 20th-century gabled porches. Windows include a 3-light casement on the ground floor far right, 20th-century casements on the ground floor to the right of the central door and far left (all with wood lintels), and various 1-light and 2-light casements to the first floor. The building has limestone quoins and stone-coped gables with kneelers. A 19th-century 2-storey extension adjoins the left side, and a single-storey brick extension is present on the right. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and turned balusters to the dog-leg staircase. Three modern skylight windows have been added to the roof of the south-facing elevation.
