Description

Westhill House, along with its attached outbuilding and walls, is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and an extension of two bays to the left (south) made in the late 17th century. The main structure features three right bays made of coursed limestone rubble banded with ironstone and stands two storeys tall. The two left bays are under a single gable, constructed of coursed limestone rubble, also two storeys with an attic. The roof is made of artificial stone slate, with both brick and stone stacks.

The house is arranged in a U-plan. There is a blocked 2-light stone mullioned window to the cellar in the second bay from the left. The entrance, located in the third bay from the right, features a stone lintel, a 6-panel door, and a timber lattice work porch. To the left of the entrance is a 2-light window with a wood lintel and an old iron casement, while to the right is another 2-light window with a wood lintel and a 20th-century casement. The right bay has a 4-light window with a wood lintel and an old iron casement. Similar windows can be found in the right bay on the first floor and in the third bay from the right, along with a 2-light casement window with a wood lintel in the second bay from the right. The two left bays feature 2-light windows with stone lintels and wood mullions and transoms on both floors, and there is a 2-light casement window with a plain stone frame in the attic. The gable ends are coped with kneelers, flanking gabled wings at the rear.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have a late 17th-century fireplace with a bolection surround in the hall, re-arranged early 17th-century panelling, and a chequer floor made of white Culworth stone and black Byfield stone. One bedroom contains early 17th-century panelling with a carved frieze and an elaborate fireplace surround and overmantel featuring two arches flanked by Doric columns.

The adjoining outbuilding at the rear left wing is likely from around 1700 and is constructed of squared coursed ironstone with a slate roof and a brick stack. It is a single storey with two bays, featuring a doorway in the right bay with a wood lintel and a 3-light casement window with a wood lintel to the left. The interior of the outbuilding was not inspected.

There is also a wall extending from the east and west fronts of the house along the High Street, dating from the 17th century. This wall is made of squared coursed ironstone with stone coping. The western section is L-shaped, turning north at an angle to separate the house from the farmyard.
