Description
Danvers House East and Danvers House West is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 18th century, likely incorporating earlier structures, and was enlarged in the mid-18th and 19th centuries. There is a sundial dated 1732 located at the rear of Danvers House East. The building is constructed from ironstone ashlar and coursed ironstone rubble, with a roof that was covered in snow at the time of the survey. It has an irregular U-plan with a main block that runs east to west and features two irregularly spaced wings with hipped roofs projecting from the north front.
The east wing, built in the 19th century, is two storeys high with four bays. A section of the main block, set back to the right, is two storeys and has an attic with two bays. The west wing, dating from the mid-18th century, is also two storeys and includes a cellar. The entrance in the second bay from the right has a flat stone frame with a keyblock and a six-panel door with an overlight. To the right, there is a sash window with a flat stone frame and keyblock, and similar windows are found on the first floor. The building features a parapet with a segmental pediment.
The west wing has angle pilasters and a moulded cornice, with four blocked two-light cellar windows that have flat stone mullions, except for the one in the second bay from the right, which is boarded over. Sash windows with flat stone frames and keyblocks are present on both floors. The section of the main block to the left has an entrance in the right bay with a flat stone frame and keyblock, leading to a six-panel door with a fanlight. There is a sash window to the left with a flat stone frame and keyblock, and similar windows are found on the first floor. The east wing features four-pane sash windows with flat stone frames and keyblocks on both floors.
Inside, Danvers House East was remodeled in the 20th century. Danvers House West has not been inspected but is said to contain an 18th-century staircase with Doric newel posts and turned balusters, as well as a 17th-century fireplace. It is believed to have been built in the early 18th century on older foundations by Sir John D'Anvers.
