Description

Wharfinger's house at Crick Wharf, built around 1815 with later alterations, is possibly designed by Benjamin Bevan in the 'Old Grand Union' style seen elsewhere on the Leicester Line. It has a T-plan layout and is constructed of painted brick with hipped slate roofs and tall external wall stacks. The symmetrical front faces the wharf and features two storeys with three bays. The central doorway has a part-glazed 20th-century door and a glazed overlight, and there is a 20th-century open porch with a felt roof. On either side of the doorway, there is a single three-light casement window, each flanked by rectangular shutter recesses. Above, a central two-light casement is flanked by single three-light casements, similar to those below. All openings have cambered arches, and the casements date from the late 19th or early 20th century. Adjoining to the left is a single-storey Wharfinger's office, also of painted brick, with a pitched slate roof and a gable end stack. It has an off-centre doorway with a plank door and a single three-light casement similar to those on the house. This building is a slightly altered example of a canal wharf house, a type that is now increasingly rare.
