Description

The north entrance to Crick Tunnel on the Grand Union Canal is an early 19th-century structure designed by engineer James Barnes. It features a red brick parapet that has been patched with blue brick and is partly rendered, topped with a stone coping. The arch is framed by flat pilasters, and the flanking walls, which are also partly rendered brick, curve forward slightly and end with flat buttresses. There is a blocked opening with a rendered lintel in the center of the parapet, and a brick string course runs along the base of the parapet. The tunnel itself was opened in 1814 and measures 1,528 yards in length.
