Description

Cromwell House is a house located on the east side of High Street in Astcote, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ironstone dressings and features an old plain-tile roof. It has a T-plan layout, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window range.

The entrance is through a plank door located to the left of centre, which has a wooden lintel above it. The ground floor centre features a two-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion window, while the other windows on the ground and first floors are three-light casements with wooden lintels and ironstone jambs that are part of the original stone mullion windows. The house has a chamfered plinth, an ironstone hollow-chamfered string course, limestone quoins, and ironstone-coped gables with kneelers.

At the rear, there is a two-storey stone stair turret positioned at the left corner, and a two-storey and attic wing that is likely of the same date as the main range or slightly later. Inside, notable features include ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams, a large open fireplace with a cambered stop-moulded bressumer, and a stone corner fireplace in the rear wing with a Tudor-arched head, along with a similar smaller fireplace upstairs. The roof is supported by collar-trusses.
