Description

The Thatched House is a house that was also a hotel at the time of listing, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and coursed limestone rubble, topped with a thatched roof and stone stacks. The main range is centrally located and consists of two storeys and an attic, featuring four bays. It is flanked by lower storey extensions, which are also from the 18th century, with one bay to the left and two bays to the right.

The entrance to the main range is in the second bay from the left and features a keystoned lintel above a plank door. On either side of the entrance are three-light windows with keystoned lintels and old iron casements. In the right bay and the second bay from the right, there are three- and two-light casement windows under a continuous wooden lintel. The first floor has a three-light casement window with a wood lintel in the right bay, and three-light casement windows with keystoned lintels in the second bay from the right and the left bay. A long window runs through the mezzanine and first floor in the second bay from the left, and a dormer features an old iron casement. The gable ends are coped with kneelers.

The extension to the right has three-light windows with wood lintels and old iron casements on both floors. The left extension has two two-light casement windows with wood lintels on the ground floor and a similar three-light window on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected. It is noted that the house was built around 1700 by John Hodges.
