Description
A pair of houses, originally built in the 18th century and altered in the 20th century, formerly served as an inn. The houses are constructed of squared limestone with a reed thatch roof and brick end and ridge stacks. They have a two- and three-unit plan and two storeys with an attic, displaying a seven-window range. A central carriage arch features a depressed arch. A 2-light casement window is located to the far left and to the right of centre; the window to the left (Lower Gate House) has a flat-arched head, while the window to the right (Upper Gate House) has a wooden lintel. Further 2-light casement windows are present on both the ground and first floors, all with flat-arched heads. Two dormers house 2-light casement windows. The gables are stone-coped. A cross-shaped ridge stack to the right of the centre is partly original. Inside the Lower Gate House, there is a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer in what was formerly a bakery. The interior features chamfered spine beams, old stud crown glass overlight, a collar truss roof with two tiers of purlins and a ridge piece. The Upper Gate House also has spine beams.
