Description
Compton House, along with its wall, gates, and gatepiers to the forecourt, was built in 1893 by Fairfax B. Wade. The structure features coursed squared limestone and red brick, with limestone dressings. It has double-leaf timber gates that are reinforced with iron bars and topped with spear finials. The gatepiers have stone bases and are decorated with bands of red brick in stretcher bond. The gates are flanked by low walls made of coursed squared limestone, which are topped with stone balustrades. The balustrades consist of moulded balusters of square section, divided into bays by plain stone piers that have moulded stone caps, which are level with the stone rail of the balustrade. There is one bay to the left of the gates and six bays to the right, with the pier at the left end also banded with red brick.
