Description

ASHBY ST.LEDGERS MAIN STREET SP5768 (East side) 17/20 Gates and gatepiers and steps approx. 8m. NE of Manor House

GV II

Gates and gatepiers. c.1935 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Limestone piers stepped back towards the top. Moulded capitals with ball finials; wrought-iron gates with Tudor rose motif and double ironwork top with initials of Lord and Lady Wimborne. When open they read I.W and A.W. and when closed they combine. North of the gateway is a short flight of steps descending to the orchard. C. Hussey notes that the gates were among the last additions to Ashby St. Ledgers Manor House with the "patterns of the ironwork deriving from Lutyens' Delhi period". (C.Hussey: Ashby St. Ledgers; Country Life 1951, p.499).
