Description
The gates and gatepiers, along with steps, are located approximately 8 meters northeast of the Manor House in Ashby St. Ledgers. They were designed around 1935 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The gatepiers are made of limestone and are stepped back towards the top, featuring moulded capitals with ball finials. The wrought-iron gates display a Tudor rose motif and a double ironwork top that includes the initials of Lord and Lady Wimborne. When the gates are open, the initials read I.W and A.W., and when closed, they combine. To the north of the gateway, there is a short flight of steps that descends to the orchard. C. Hussey noted that these gates were among the last additions to Ashby St. Ledgers Manor House, with the design of the ironwork reflecting Lutyens' style from his time in Delhi.
