Description

This is a group of seven chest tombs located to the east of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary, dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Two tombs situated to the north-east of the chancel, near the corner of the churchyard, are made of limestone and are of the 'table' type, featuring a ledger supported by ornamental volute legs; one of these tombs is dated 1696. Another tomb to the north-west of the chancel is made of ironstone and is of a similar type, likely from the late 17th century, with plain supports. The chest tomb furthest east of the chancel is from the 18th century and is made of limestone with a panelled chest. Just east of the chancel is a late 18th-century tomb made of ironstone, which has a chamfered plinth and plain sides, dedicated to members of the Hill family. Another tomb to the south of this one is an 18th-century limestone tomb with balustered corners. The tomb dated 1875 is noted as not being of special architectural interest.
