Description

This is a group of eight chest tombs located approximately 14 metres and 22 metres north-north-west, and 25 metres north of the nave of the Church of St. Mary. The two tombs that are about 14 metres north-north-west date from the early 18th century and are made of limestone. The southern tomb features a cyma-moulded plinth, a splayed cornice on top, and two inscription panels with raised surrounds. The northern tomb has a raised surround for narrow panels and a central inscription panel, with skulls flanking a winged cherub's head above a worn inscription. The chest tomb located approximately 22 metres north-north-west also dates from the early to mid-18th century and is made of limestone. It has a cyma-moulded plinth and cornice, with carved scrolls flanking the inscription panel. The group of five chest tombs approximately 25 metres north dates from the 18th century and is also made of limestone, with all having moulded tops. The Leake tomb to the south-west, dated 1767 and from the 1750s, features a rococo cartouche. A similar mid-18th century tomb is located to the north. The tombs to the east are dated 1786, and one commemorates Anne Fisher, who died in the early 19th century.
