Description

Pomfret Lodge is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in the early 19th century but with origins dating back to the 18th century. The building features rendered brick and slate roofs, along with rendered internal and ridge stacks. It has a double-depth plan and is designed in a cottage orne style.

The house is two stories high and has a five-window range. The central entrance consists of double-leaf, part-glazed doors topped with an overlight and a 4-centred head, set within a two-storey gabled porch. The ground floor of the porch is open on arches, with the middle arch having a 4-centred head flanked by arches with pointed arched heads, all beneath a single stepped hood mould.

On the first floor, the central porch window has two lights, a 4-centred head, and a hood mould, flanked by blind slits with cross slits above. The barge-boarded porch gable features a blind pointed arch. The remaining windows are Tudor-style, with two lights on both the ground and first floors, showcasing timber tracery and cusped heads to the lights, along with paired 8-pane sashes, straight heads, and hood moulds. The building stands on a limestone plinth.

At the rear, there is a range with exposed red brickwork in English bond, 16-pane sashes, and a central porch. A two-storey wing is located at the rear left. Inside, the main ground floor rooms are adorned with late 18th century to early 19th century marble chimneypieces. The open well staircase features slender alternating twisted and fluted column balusters on vases, carved tread ends, a ramped and wreathed handrail, and fluted column newels.
