Description

Sundial Cottage is a house, originally three cottages, dating to the late 17th century, and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone, banded with ironstone, with a slate roof and brick end and ridge stacks. The building is arranged as three units and has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. The gable end facing Station Road has a 6-panel part-glazed door to the right, set within a 20th-century porch. There are 2-light casement windows to the ground, first, and attic floors, all with wooden lintels. A large rectangular limestone sundial is set into the gable. The front to the left, which is four bays wide, has a 20th-century door to the left of centre, also with a wooden lintel, and 2-light casements to the ground and first floors, again with wooden lintels, except for a central ground floor 4-light window. Blocked circular windows with limestone surrounds are found in the left end gable. The building features quoins and stone-coped gables with kneelers. Inside, there are chamfered spine beams, some with ogee stops, and a large open fireplace with an ogee stop-chamfered bressumer and smoke cupboards on either side.
