Description

Brackley Lodge, including its gate piers, is a building dating from the early 18th century, situated on Brackley High Street. The east front presents as two distinct ranges. The south range is a three-storeyed structure built of ashlar stone, featuring a moulded cornice with modillions at the second floor level. It has a balustraded parapet that connects with the north range. Five sash windows are located on the first floor, set within moulded stone frames with keystones and scroll-bracketed sills. Three further sash windows are positioned above the cornice on the second floor, similarly framed. The north range appears to be a newer or rebuilt section, constructed of ironstone ashlar. It incorporates a projecting porch and a low, two-storeyed wing extending northwards. The porch is distinguished by Doric-style side angle capitals and a broken pediment over the doorway, with a curved gable that displays a moulded scrolled panel. Sash windows within this section are framed with moulded stone, showcasing segmental pediments and pulvinated friezes. The ironstone gate piers, which front this range, are topped with ball finials. Interior elements of the south range are largely modern, though some rooms on the first floor are reported to retain early 18th century white-painted panelling. The sash windows in these rooms are of 18th or 19th century date. A modern, two-storey block, featuring four sash windows and a Welsh slate hipped roof, is connected to the rear, on the southwest side.
