Description
Magdalen College Chapel of Saints John and James is a Grade II* listed building located on Brackley High Street. It was founded by Robert, known as "Le Bossu," Earl of Leicester, who died in 1168, originally serving as the chapel of St John's Hospital. The chapel is currently used as the chapel for Magdalen College School.
The structure features a nave constructed of ashlar and coursed rubble, with a tower situated at the north-west corner. The west end of the chapel showcases a reset 12th-century door, above which is a three-light 13th-century window. On either side of the window are moulded niches, each containing a seated figure. The gable end of the chapel has been rebuilt.
The chapel underwent restoration in 1746 and again twice in the 19th century. The latter restorations were carried out for Canon Thickness, the vicar, by architect Mr. Buckeridge, as noted in "A History of Brackley" by A Green, published in 1869.
