Description

Brampton Manor, with attached boundary walls, gatepiers and railings

House, late 16th century with 17th century additions, external remodelling circa 1808, and further 19th and 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of rendered Coal Measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, coped gables, and ashlar ridge stacks, supplemented by two smaller brick stacks—one to the gable and one at ridge level. Stone slated roofs cover the structure. The plan comprises a double gabled range with a lower earlier two-storey range to the west set at right angles to the main house.

The north elevation displays two storeys and attics across two bays. The west gable features five-light chamfered mullioned and transomed windows to both ground and first floors, with a two-light recessed chamfered mullioned window to the attic. The east gable contains 4 × 4 pane glazing bar sash windows in flush stone frames with lightly moulded lintels at ground and first floors, and a two-light recessed chamfered mullioned window to the attic. An off-centre doorway with a restored 19th century surround and 20th century glazed door is enclosed by a 19th century porch featuring Tuscan columns, architrave, frieze and cornice.

The rear elevation of the main range displays two, three and four-light chamfered mullioned windows alongside 4 × 4 pane glazing bar sashes. The east elevation is punctuated by stacked 4 × 4 pane glazing bar sashes, with the ground-floor openings featuring wedge lintels while the upper floor window heads are obscured by a projecting timber eaves cornice. The two-storey western range exhibits a mullioned and transomed window with casements on its north elevation. The rear elevation of this range contains inserted 20th century gabled dormers with associated windows and door frames.

Interior

The main range contains significant 17th century decorative plasterwork in two ground-floor rooms and one first-floor chamber. The front room within the east gabled range features a decorated ceiling with circular patterning across one half and diamond and square patterning across the other, all contained within moulded cornices and spine beams. The rear room of this range displays a plasterwork overmantel with interlaced strapwork based on a knot garden pattern. The principal first-floor chamber, now subdivided, contains a 12-panel ceiling with moulded beams bearing decorative pendants and floral motifs at the intersections. A smaller first-floor chamber retains 17th century square panelling.

The attics display exposed tie-beam trusses carrying a single purlin roof with curved windbraces. The ridge purlin is notched into the heads of principal rafters and set diagonally. One truss is closed with infilled stud partitioning. Moulded stone hearths serve the ground-floor rooms containing plasterwork, while the present kitchen features a massive altered hearth and substantial spine beams. The lower western range contains two cruck trusses supporting a single purlin roof, with a table yoke carrying a flat-set ridge purlin.

A low boundary stone wall fronts the main elevation, surmounted by a deeply chamfered ashlar coping and topped by 19th century decorative cast-iron railings with intersecting heads. Square gatepiers to the central gateway bear rounded pyramidal caps and are matched by cast-iron gates. A tall rubble boundary wall encloses the west side, with a taller crenellated section above a semicircular headed gateway.
