Description

The Fox and Hounds Public House is an inn that dates from the early 18th century, with a date of 1752 noted, and has elements from the early 19th century. It consists of two ranges: the 18th-century range faces west, while the early 19th-century range faces north towards High Street.

The west range is constructed of rubble stone and features a Bridgwater tile roof with coped gables, end wall, and ridge stacks. It is one and a half storeys high and has two dormer gables. The left side gable includes a three-light ovolo-moulded mullion window with a hoodmould, and the ground floor has a lean-to with a broad eight-pane window. To the right, there is a two-light flush cyma-moulded window and a central door set in a stone slab porch. The right side features a coped dormer gable with a saddlestone, dated J. T. 1752, and a dripstone over a former three-light flush cyma-moulded window, with the mullions removed for casements. Below, there is a pair of twelve-pane sashes in unmoulded flush surrounds. A flat-roofed 20th-century addition is located at the south end.

The north range is made of ashlar stone and has a low-pitched slate roof, with a raised plinth, platband, and eaves band. It is two storeys high and has a two-window range of sixteen-pane sashes, with a door to the right. Inside, the original range features a large fireplace with a timber lintel to the left of the entry, and a moulded 18th-century corner fireplace at the south end.
