Description

Merewater is a farmhouse and former public house, now a house, with a datestone dating back to 1634. It is constructed of squared coursed lias and features a thatched roof. The building has a two-unit layout, originally designed with a through passage plan, and is a single storey with an attic. It has a two-window range and a central entrance that has a four-centred head and a studded door. To the left of the entrance is a casement window with leaded lights, and there is a fire window with a stone surround. A stone mullioned window is located on the first floor to the right. The building has brick stacks at the ridge and end, and a datestone above the entrance shows 1639. There is a small window in the left gable featuring a quatrefoil design set in a deep splay.

To the right of the main house is a mid-18th century wing, while the similar rear elevation includes a three-light stone mullioned window and an entrance with a four-centred head. A late 17th century wing is located at the rear. Inside, the ground floor has two open fireplaces, and the first floor east end room features a mid-17th century fireplace with a four-centred chamfered head located in the corner of the room. The rear wing has a butt purlin roof with principals supported on rough stone corbels. The building was formerly known as the Lion Public House.
