Description
Moreton Pinkney War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920 and unveiled by Sir Arthur Dryden. It is situated within the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade II* listed building, and is near several Grade II listed headstones.
The memorial features a stone Latin cross designed in the Celtic style, with intricate carved knot work detail on the front (east) face. The cross stands on a tapering square plinth, which is elevated by a two-stepped base that rests on a narrow square block.
The dedication is incised into the front (east) side of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN THANKFULNESS TO HIM/ FOR THE WONDERFUL VICTORY/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ AND THE RIGHT IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHONERS OF/ MORETON PINKNEY." The rear (west) face of the memorial is inscribed with four names.
