Description
Sponne House is a bank and shops that was formerly an inn, dating from the mid-18th century but with earlier origins. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a slate roof with a brick ridge stack. The building has an L-plan layout and stands two storeys high with an attic, displaying a five-window range.
The central carriage arch has a depressed-arched head and imposts. To the right, there is a 20th-century canted bay window, while a 20th-century door to the left has panelled reveals, reeded pilasters, and a cornice or hood. A 12-pane sash window on the far left has a moulded stone sill, gauged brick lintel, and keyblock. The first floor has similar windows, except for a central Venetian window with an open pediment. The eaves are moulded stone.
At the rear right, there is a wing that has undergone many 20th-century alterations. An optician's shop in this wing features a large open fireplace with a cambered ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer inscribed "TO 1707 GS," which includes a central carving of a talbot dog. The building was known as the Talbot Hotel until 1960 and was referred to as the Tabard before 1643. It was owned by Archdeacon Sponne as part of his charity's endowments since at least 1440 and remained in the ownership of the Sponne charity until 1895.
