Description
Nos. 177 and 179 on Watling Street West is a house and shop that was formerly a public house, known as the Dolphin Inn. It dates from the 18th century but has earlier origins. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a plain-tile roof with brick end stacks. It has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range to the front. The central doorway has a round-arched head and is flanked by wide canted bay windows. The first floor has 6-pane horned sash windows with timber lintels above them. The building also features dentilled brick eaves and a hipped roof dormer that contains two-light leaded casements. There is a wing at the rear left that may date from the late 17th century. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a cambered ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer.
