Description
The Post Office, formerly a house, dates back to 1799 and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with flared headers and features a slate roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a central staircase plan and is three stories high with a five-window range. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a timber surround that includes thin panelled pilasters and brackets supporting a deep moulded cornice. The windows have moulded rendered surrounds, with 20th-century windows on the ground floor, 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, and 9-pane sash windows in the attic, all featuring stone sills with console brackets. There is a circular window between the left ground floor windows. The central bay projects forward and is topped with a pediment that frames a datestone in a horizontal oval panel. Additional architectural details include a rendered plinth, storey bands, a moulded stone eaves cornice, and a string course at the base of the pediment. The ends and central bay have rendered chamfered quoins, and the gables are stone-coped.
